Abstract
Astronomical spectrographs have been lacking calibration sources that offer the precision needed for the detection of Earth-like exoplanets. Laser frequency combs promise to overcome this limitation by providing a regular pattern of extremely sharp spectral lines that are linked to an atomic clock. While this break-through technology has been honored with the Nobel Prize of 2005 for having sparked revolutionary advances in laboratory spectroscopy, its potential in astronomical spectroscopy is only now starting to be harnessed. As frequency combs for astronomical applications (astro-combs) have become commercially available, several observatories in the world have recently been equipped with this technology. Among them is the Xinglong Observatory of the NAOC, China. This talk is intended to provide future users with an understanding of the underlying principles and basic design of this novel kind of astronomical instrument. It will give an overview of the current state-of-the art, recommendations on how the instrument can best be integrated and used, and present an overview of applications in which astro-combs may pave the way to novel discoveries.
All are welcome!
